Day 5 – Call Me Ishmael

Take the first sentence from your favorite book and make it the first sentence of your post.

This was too hard for me as I am an avid reader….

The Bible  – by God

Genesis 1 New International Version (NIV) The Beginning  1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Little Women by Lousia May Alcott – “Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,” grumbled Jo, lying on the rug.

The first book of the Gunslinger series by Stephen King – “The Man in Black fled across the desert, and the Gunslinger followed”

The Hobbit  J.R.R. Tolkien =  “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.

1984 by George Orwell –  “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.”

Romeo & Juliet  by Shakespeare –

Two households, both alike in dignity,

In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,

From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,

Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

There are so many more books with lines that will keep you guessing, and wanting more.  So how can we do this with each passing post, how do we leave the reader hungering for more, wanting to not stop reading until every word written has been read.  Its with great enthusiasm, wit, and self control not to give to much of the story away.  This makes the story teller not just great but a legend in their own words.   For words can transport us, make us fly, make us reel with pain, or cry at the very next word written.  A great storyteller knows when to push the limits of the imagination so our soul soars on wings black as night against a silver sky.  It also can take us low in the the very dark sub bowels of the earth where no light reaches and the dark, cold, unfeeling, steady drip, drip, drip of water slides from the backs of demons become the echo in my mind.   Words can touch our thoughts, stir passions, and take us to planets not yet seen.  We can create for good or evil.  Our characters can be real or made up, they can even be non human.  This is why I can’t choose just one book, I have read to many wonder filled opening lines to know that no one book could ever hold the attention of mere man (woman) our very soul seeks out more and more….even here on this blogging forum we seek more to write about with each post, more to read as we scan the treasure trove of words by talented and gifted writers.
